About the object: Gundula Sommerer's oval vases are handmade from white clay using the slab technique and each one is unique. The indentations in the unglazed surface of the vase are blackened. The inside of the vase is glazed and watertight. This vase is approx. 29 cm high, 13 cm wide and 6 cm deep. It is ideal for fresh bouquets, field flowers and cornflowers as well as for dried grasses or individual flowers.
Manufacturing process: The vase is made of white clay using the slab technique. The indentations in the unglazed surface, which are created during the drying process before the first firing, are dusted with an oxide mixture after biscuit firing (920 degrees). The oxides remain in the depressions and the vase is glazed from the inside. This vase was fired at a temperature of 1250 to 1280 degrees in an electric kiln. After the second firing, the oxide in the cavities is black.
