About the object: Gundula Sommerer's black Raku bowls are anything but ordinary. The handmade objects are unique and each bowl in this small series differs either in shape, size or surface structure. The use of the raku process when firing the objects produces carbon, which penetrates the pores of the bowl and gives the pieces a permanent deep black color. This black, in combination with the cracks in the surface of the bowl, leads to a unique individualization of the surface structure. Both visually and haptically. The silky matt deep black of the bowls harmonizes with both strong and reduced colors and offers a magnificent stage for objects placed in it. This Raku bowl is polished with antique wax. This makes the surface less sensitive and slightly water-repellent. Dry food could be presented on the bowl, although the bowl is better suited for keys or things that are dear to you. The bowl measures approx. 21 cm x 21 cm and weighs approx. 960 grams. It is part of a small series and is also available in other sizes and shapes.

Manufacturing process: This clay bowl is handmade using the slab technique. The bowl is not glazed and is fired using the raku method. In this process, the first firing of the bowl takes place at 920°C in an electric kiln and the second firing at approx. 1040°C in a gas kiln. The bowl is removed from the kiln while still red-hot and placed in a box with combustible material. It continues to burn in this box for hours in a reduced atmosphere. After cooling down, it is polished with antique wax. This polish makes the surface less sensitive and slightly water-repellent.

  • Gundula Sommerer's vases are waterproof, the bowls are slightly water-repellent. The ceramics should only be washed by hand if necessary. Use clear water or a maximum of gentle cleaning agents, a damp cloth and, if necessary, a soft brush. And never use abrasive sponges.
  • Dry the ceramic carefully after cleaning to avoid water stains.
  • Gundula Sommerer's ceramics are not suitable for storing food and are not dishwasher-safe.
  • Ceramics can be rougher on the underside than containers made of other materials. We therefore recommend protecting sensitive surfaces on which the ceramic is to stand from scratching if necessary.
