About the object: Gundula Sommerer's oval Raku vases are handmade using a construction technique and each one is unique. The use of the Raku process when firing the objects produces carbon, which penetrates the pores of the vase and gives the pieces a permanent deep black color. This black, in combination with the cracks in the surface of the vase, leads to a unique individualization of the surface structure. Both visually and haptically. This Raku vase is approx. 16 cm high, 14 cm wide, 5.5 cm deep and waterproof. It is ideal for fresh bouquets, field flowers and cornflowers as well as dried grasses or bouquets. The deep black makes colors shine! Gundula Sommerer produces this vase in different sizes in small series.

Manufacturing process: This ceramic vase made of clay is handmade using the slab technique. The vase is not glazed and is fired using the raku method. In this process, the first firing of the vase takes place at 920°C in an electric kiln and the second firing at approx. 1040°C in a gas kiln. The vase is removed from the kiln while still red-hot and placed in a box with combustible material. It continues to burn in this box for hours in a reduced atmosphere. After cooling down, it is polished on the outside with antique wax and made watertight on the inside with a special sealant.

  • Gundula Sommerer's vases are waterproof, the bowls are slightly water-repellent. The ceramics should only be washed by hand if necessary. Use clear water or a maximum of gentle cleaning agents, a damp cloth and, if necessary, a soft brush. And never use abrasive sponges.
  • Dry the ceramic carefully after cleaning to avoid water stains.
  • Gundula Sommerer's ceramics are not suitable for storing food and are not dishwasher-safe.
  • Ceramics can be rougher on the underside than containers made of other materials. We therefore recommend protecting sensitive surfaces on which the ceramic is to stand from scratching if necessary.
