About the property: Japanese ceramics meet Swedish design: Wabi-Sabi. With its slender, elongated shape, this minimalist porcelain vase by Masayoshi Oya is perfect as a colorful focal point on a table or windowsill. Its cream-colored undertone serves as the base for the two additional shades, which the artist describes as “Gryning” (a Swedish word for dawn). The visible brushstrokes give the vase a lively, artisanal touch and make it a stylish focal point.
Manufacturing process: Masayoshi Oya works with white porcelain, which he shapes primarily on the potter’s wheel. Depending on the object and the desired wall thickness, he also works with rolled-out clay or plaster molds. His clean, simple vessels take the form of cylinders and plates in various sizes.
After shaping, the surface is decorated by hand with graphic patterns and colored glazes. The white porcelain serves as a canvas. Oya works with precision but also leaves room for chance. Small drips and unexpected movements of the glaze become part of the surface and give each piece its own character.
His working method combines traditional Japanese craftsmanship with a free and experimental approach. Kneading, turning, grinding, and polishing are just as much a part of the process as playing with color and glaze. The result is handmade objects that combine the practicality of everyday items with the artistry of a work of art.

About the Artist: Masayoshi Oya was born in Japan in 1979 and now lives and works in Gothenburg. His ceramics combine Japanese craft traditions with experimental influences from his adopted home of Sweden. This results in a distinctive, colorful visual language that combines traditional forms with graphic patterns and playful glazes. His work is a fusion of precision and spontaneity. Oya finds inspiration in nature, in traditions, in the unusual, and in the encounter between Japan and Sweden. His ceramics demonstrate how the interplay of different cultures can give rise to a personal and contemporary design language. He runs the Oyama ceramics studio in Gothenburg.
His relationship with ceramics began during his school years in Japan. In a ceramics class, Masayoshi Oya discovered his immediate connection to the material and quickly knew that he wanted to work with it. After studying ceramics at the Aichi Prefectural Seto College in Tokyo, he moved to Sweden in 2007 and studied ceramics at Capellagården on Öland, later earning his master’s degree in applied arts at HDK-Valand in Gothenburg. The transition between the two cultures opened up a new approach to his own artistic expression. To this day, this connection continues to shape his work. His works have been exhibited at venues including the Gothenburg Museum of Art, the Design Museum Helsinki, Wanås Konst, the Swedish Embassy in Tokyo, the Röhsska Museum, and the Art Museum in Tønder. Recently, a work by Masayoshi was also added to the collection of the Swedish National Museum.
