About the object: Akiko Takahashi's square serving plate comes with a thin, brown glaze, has a side length of approx. 13 cm and is only 0.5 cm high. This flat plate is part of Akiko's "Itazara" series and has a narrow rim on the top and beveled edges on the back. These edges create a pleasant grip when carrying the plate.
Manufacturing process: For her "Itazara" (flat plate) series, Akiko cuts the clay into thin slabs and compresses them with a press to reduce air and minimize deformation. The clay is cut into shape using a template and the inner surface of the top is carefully carved, leaving a sharp, clean outer edge. On the back, all edges are beveled to create a comfortable grip for the fingers. Each piece is dried slowly and thoroughly to achieve a flat, stable shape. Akiko fired her work in an electric kiln at 1245 °C in a carbon-reducing atmosphere.

Akiko Takahashi is a Japanese ceramist who runs her small ceramics studio called Yanasan Kobo in Yanaka, a quieter part of Tokyo. Akiko designs and makes each of her ceramics at her workplace, which is just the size of "four tatami mats" (approx. 6 square meters). Akiko Takahashi has been making pottery since her primary school days and the reason why she still does it today is simple: working and shaping the clay with her own hands and holding a finished object in her hands at the end is what motivates Akiko.
Akiko writes: "I want my objects to bring moments of discovery and joy to those who use them. Not only functionality, but also inspiration."
