About the object: Asta Volkensfeld's ceramic bowl has a diameter of approx. 25 cm and is approx. 7.5 cm high. Its clearly structured geometric pattern stands in exciting contrast to the random, lively smoke pattern, which is only created by the third firing, the smoke firing. This combination in the surface design, enhanced by the use of Asta's self-made ash glazes, makes each object unique. One of a kind. The bowl is polished, giving it a silky sheen, and sealed with rice water. This allows it to present beautiful things, but also food such as nuts, pastries or fruit. Or as an object to delight your senses.

Production process: Asta Volkensfeld's ceramics are created using a build-up technique. The objects are then polished with a semi-precious stone in several passes in a leather-hard state. This creates the silky sheen. The objects are fired three times. The first two firings take place in an electric kiln at a maximum of 980 degrees. After the first firings, the graphic pattern is applied using masking tape and a sand-slurry mixture. The final third firing, the smoke firing, takes place in the smoke barrel. Smoke firing can take up to two days. The ceramics lie in sawdust, brushwood and newspaper. This is how the typical smoke drawings are created. After the smoke firing and careful cleaning of the pieces, the works are coated with beeswax and polished again.

  • Asta Volkensfeld ceramics should only be washed by hand if necessary. Use clear water or a maximum of gentle cleaning agents, a damp cloth and, if necessary, a soft brush. And never use abrasive sponges.
  • Dry the ceramic carefully after cleaning to avoid water stains.
  • Asta's vases are waterproof. The bowls are sealed with rice water and are therefore suitable for use with food. However, the bowls should not be used for salads, for example. Acid can damage the polished surface. However, the bowls can be used for things like pastries, nuts or uncut fresh fruit.
  • Ceramics can be rougher on the underside than containers made of other materials. We therefore recommend protecting sensitive surfaces on which the ceramic is to stand from scratching if necessary.

Asta Volkensfeld

Asta Volkensfeld's work focuses on the themes of origin, identity and transience. Her ceramics appear clear and structured due to their geometric patterns, while at the same time they are touching due to their beauty of form and functionality. The objects develop a quiet presence and enter into a subtle dialog with the viewer.

Asta Volkensfeld was born in Eutin in 1981. After training as a dressmaker in Hamburg in 2005, she attended the School of Textile Design in Berlin from 2015 to 2018. In 2021, she began her ceramics training and collaboration with Marie-Annick Le Blanc. She has lived in Brandenburg since 2022 and runs her own studio in Groß Köris, where she offers courses and workshops. She has been a member of GEDOK Brandenburg since 2023 and was awarded the DA! Art Award in 2024.

The focus of her artistic practice is on ceramic objects using the build-up technique and their refinement in smoke firing. She produces her ash glazes herself. The natural color tones and multi-layered surfaces of her works emphasize the close connection between nature, man and craft that is inherent in her works.
