About the object: Asta Volkensfeld's ceramic vase is approx. 18 cm high and has a diameter of approx. 15 cm. Its clearly structured geometric pattern is in exciting contrast to the random, lively smoke pattern, which is only created by the third firing, the smoke firing. This combination in the surface design, enhanced by the use of Asta's self-made ash glazes, makes each object unique. One of a kind. The vase is waterproof and can serve as a vase for both fresh and dried flowers and branches. Or as an object to delight your senses.

Manufacturing process: Asta Volkensfeld's ceramics are created using a build-up technique. The objects are then polished with a semi-precious stone in several passes in a leather-hard state. This creates the silky sheen. The objects are fired three times. The first two firings take place in an electric kiln at a maximum of 980 degrees. After the first firings, the graphic pattern is applied using masking tape and a sand-slurry mixture. The final third firing, the smoke firing, takes place in the smoke barrel. Smoke firing can take up to two days. The ceramics lie in sawdust, brushwood and newspaper. This creates the typical smoke drawings. After the smoke firing and careful cleaning of the pieces, the works are coated with beeswax and polished again.

  • Asta Volkensfeld ceramics should only be washed by hand if necessary. Use clear water or a maximum of gentle cleaning agents, a damp cloth and, if necessary, a soft brush. And never use abrasive sponges.
  • Dry the ceramic carefully after cleaning to avoid water stains.
  • Asta's vases are waterproof. The bowls are sealed with rice water and are therefore suitable for use with food. However, the bowls should not be used for salads, for example. Acid can damage the polished surface. However, the bowls can be used for things like pastries, nuts or uncut fresh fruit.
  • Ceramics can be rougher on the underside than containers made of other materials. We therefore recommend protecting sensitive surfaces on which the ceramic is to stand from scratching if necessary.

Asta Volkensfeld

Asta Volkensfeld (* 1981, Eutin) is a ceramicist, seamstress and textile designer who lives and works in Groß Körris, Brandenburg. The focus of her work lies in the creation of ceramic objects using the build-up technique and the subsequent design in smoke firing. She produces her own ash glazes.

Asta's ceramics radiate an aesthetic clarity through their geometric patterning; the beautifully shaped and functional objects are touching and engage in a dialog with the viewer. Questions of origin, identity and transience play a major role for Asta. Through the natural colors and exciting surfaces of her objects, Asta emphasizes the connection between nature, man and craftsmanship in her work.
