About the piece: This black, cylindrical bottle vase made of Japanese clay was wheel-thrown by Douglas Black. It is approximately 24 cm tall and has a diameter of 11 cm. The vase captivates with its unique, deep black glaze featuring visible bubbles, metallic shimmer, and a very uneven texture. This type of surface is created using the hikidashi technique, in which the ceramic objects are pulled red-hot from the kiln with tongs and rapidly cooled. Very exciting!
Douglas Black is an American ceramic artist who has lived and worked in Japan since 1990. His home, studio, and kilns are located in a wooded area not far from Mashiko in Tochigi Prefecture, a renowned center for traditional Japanese ceramics. Douglas produces tableware as well as objects of applied art and fine art.
