About the property: This Japanese vase by Toru Kikuchi is approximately 16 cm tall and has a maximum diameter of approximately 5 cm. Its shape is reminiscent of a small amphora that opens upward in a tulip-like form. The contrast between clean lines and organic curves makes this piece a true eye-catcher. The dark Japanese clay, combined with a partially rough, matte glaze, creates an extraordinary surface effect. Edges and rims shimmer in a warm red hue, reminiscent of volcanic embers. Only upon closer inspection do the fine nuances of the glaze emerge, lending the object additional depth. The vase looks stunning on its own but also works well in a group with other vases or vessels. It is suitable for flowers or branches of all kinds that are appropriately sized. This vase is a one-of-a-kind piece.

Manufacturing process: Toru Kikuchi’s pottery style is quite unique. He first selects the weight of the clay and then begins shaping it however inspiration strikes him. As a result, the individual pieces in a series may be similar in weight, but they often differ in shape and are never identical. His pieces are works of art, yet they also serve a practical purpose as vases or bowls. Toru experiments with different glazes, which often leads to unexpected but beautiful results.

  • The bowls from Kikuchi Toru should be washed by hand. The vases are waterproof and should only be cleaned by hand if necessary. Use clear water or a maximum of gentle cleaning agents, a damp cloth and, if necessary, a soft brush. And never use abrasive sponges.
  • Dry the container carefully after cleaning to avoid water stains.
  • Ceramic pots can be rougher on the underside than pots made of other materials. We therefore recommend protecting sensitive surfaces on which the vessel is to stand from scratching if necessary.

Kikuchi Toru

Kikuchi Toru, born in Ibaraki Prefecture, attended the Ibaraki Prefectural Ceramics Guidance Center in Kasama after graduating from design school. In 1996, he began studying under Hitoshi Fujimoto in Kasama and remained in the city even after starting his own business as a potter.

Toru Kikuchi's pottery style is very special. He first chooses the weight of the clay and then starts making shapes as he comes up with them. The individual pieces in a series may be similar in weight, but are often different in shape and never the same. His pieces are artistic, but always have a practical use as a vase or bowl.
