About the piece: The 20.5-cm-tall ceramic vase from Elke Sada’s Capriccio series has a diameter of 7 cm and resembles a painting brought to life in three dimensions. Rolled and interconnected surfaces form a basic structure whose surfaces are characterized by fascinating interplays of color. Form, lines, and swaths of color combine to create a unique composition. The piece invites you to discover new details and connections every time you look at it. At the same time, its function as a vase constantly creates new possibilities for interaction. Flowers and twigs echo the existing colors, add new accents, and allow the vase’s interplay of colors to appear in ever-changing combinations. A slight turn of the vase or a new angle of view changes the effect dramatically.

Manufacturing Process: In her work, Elke Sada combines ceramic design with her passion for painting. Many of her vessels are created from clay fragments that she assembles by hand. She prefers minimalist construction techniques. The individual pieces are joined together to form a shape in which corners, edges, and traces of the creative process are deliberately left visible. For surface treatment, Elke Sada works with techniques such as printing and painting. She partially conceals her paintings under a layer of slip, so that they only become visible later in the production process. Chance and the behavior of the material play an important role in her creative process.

  • Elke Sada's vases are waterproof.
  • The ceramics can be washed by hand if necessary. Use plain water or the mildest possible detergent, a damp cloth, and, if necessary, a soft brush. And under no circumstances should you use abrasive sponges.
  • Dry the vase thoroughly after cleaning to prevent water spots.
  • Ceramic items may have a rougher underside than vessels made of other materials. We therefore recommend protecting delicate surfaces on which the ceramic items will be placed from scratches and water stains, if necessary.

Elke Sada

Elke Sada discovered ceramics by chance. In 1991, while working as a research technician in the United States, she took a pottery class. Her hands-on experience with the material inspired her so much that, a few years later, she gave up her career in chemical research and devoted herself entirely to ceramics. She studied 3D design with a focus on ceramics at Bath Spa University and subsequently studied ceramics and glass at the Royal College of Art in London.

The fusion of ceramics, painting, and graphic art remains at the heart of her work to this day. She is particularly interested in the interplay of space, color, movement, and chance. She creates colorful and unconventional vessels in which traces of the creative process, as well as corners and edges, are deliberately left visible
. Her ceramics straddle the line between applied and fine art and reflect a deep joy in experimentation.

Color plays a particularly important role. Elke Sada views it as an essential component of her ceramics and employs it deliberately and powerfully. Printing techniques, painterly elements, and various ceramic processes come together to form a striking visual language.

Elke Sada currently lives and works in Höhr-Grenzhausen. Her works have been exhibited and recognized internationally and are included in public and private collections.
