Silke Wellmeier
About the object: Silke Wellmeier's porcelain vase is part of her Grascolors series and is shown here in a green version. The slim vase is approx. 27cm high, has a diameter of 6cm and weighs approx. 180 grams. It has a silky matt, paper-like surface that is very exciting to the touch and is glazed on the inside with a transparent glaze, making it waterproof.
Grascolors: This series by Silke Wellenmeier is about color gradients of drying grasses, which capture the fleeting color palette of grass changing over time. Silke Wellmeier first documented this color palette in photographs and then translated it into porcelain for her Grascolors series of vessels. There are around 30 different shades and gradations in order to get as close as possible to the natural variety.
Production process: Silke Wellmeier colors the porcelain mass by hand according to her own recipes. She builds the vessels themselves by hand, piece by thin-walled piece. The vessels are only glazed with a transparent glaze on the inside and only lightly sanded on the outside. This preserves the silky matt surface of the porcelain. Silke fires her ceramics at an oxidizing temperature of 1260°C, using the energy she produces herself. Beautiful and very sustainable!

Silke Wellmeier was born in August 1977 and, after working as a florist, completed her training as a disc potter in 2000. From 2001 to 2005, she studied at the Institute for Artistic Ceramics and Glass (IKKG) in Höhr-Grenzhausen. Silke Wellmeier has been working as a freelance artist since graduating with a degree in fine art/ceramics in 2005 and opened her workshop/studio in Tecklenburg in 2016. She is a member of the Welbergener Kreis artists' association and regularly exhibits in Germany and abroad.
Silke Wellmeier works with porcelain as a material and constructs thin-walled, reduced forms from it by hand. She creates paper-like vessels, vases and objects with an organic-looking surface. This technique, developed during her studies, has been refined over the years with great sensitivity and precision. Her work is often organized into distinct series, each based on her own concept or theme, which she explores and expresses in her unique way.
Silke Wellmeier on her work: "In my work, I take an observational position in the microcosm that surrounds me. 'Depicting' in the literal sense means: reproducing with the material, with my hands. In this way, I try to understand processes in my environment differently. It is an artistic approach. I also want to use my manual, repetitive way of working to counteract the general tendencies towards acceleration and alienation. As an artistic form of research and dialog."
