About the object: Gundula Sommerer's blue vase made of stoneware impresses with its exciting design, is handcrafted and created using the slab technique. The shape, which is remotely reminiscent of a 7-star hotel in Dubai, is in stark contrast to the surface, which looks as if the vase was carved directly from a field of solidified lava. The bluish beige shades of the approx. 40 cm high vase created by an engobe, in combination with the many cracks in the surface, are a real eye-catcher and make this watertight vase look unique with or without flowers. The opening of the vase is round but small, making the object suitable for long-stemmed delicate bouquets, field and cornflowers, grasses or individual branches. Due to its heavy weight of approx. 4.6 kg, the vase is stable. Gundula Sommerer produces this vase in small series. Each vase is unique.
Manufacturing process: This ceramic vase made of clay is handmade using the slab technique. It is engobed on the outside and glazed on the inside. The first firing takes place in an electric kiln at 920°C, the second firing at 1280°C in a gas kiln with a reduced atmosphere (lightly salted).
This produces stoneware clay, which is much firmer than earthenware clay with firing temperatures below 1200°C. Although not recommended, the vase can also be used outside enclosed spaces.
