Saeam Kwon
Über das Objekt: Saeam Kwons Gaiwan ist ein Teeset, das in China in der klassischen Gong Fu Cha Teezeremonie verwendet wird. Es ist ca. 6 cm hoch und hat einen Durchmesser von ca. 8,5 cm. Das Set besteht aus einer Tasse mit einem Deckel, ist aus fast schwarzem Steinzeugton gedreht und innen und außen mit einer Glasur überzogen, wobei die feine Glasur immer noch die raue und sehr ausdrucksstarke Oberfläche erahnen lässt. Saeams Objekte sind dünnwandig und auf Gewichtsreduktion gedreht. In Kombination mit den spannenden Oberflächen entsteht dadurch eine sehr klare und anmutende Form. Die Füllmenge des Bechers beträgt ca. 100 ml. Die klassische Form aus Feinsteinzeug verbindet minimalistisches Design mit traditionellen koreanischen Einflüssen. Wunderschön!
Herstellungsverfahren: Saeam erstellt ihre Objekte aus schwarzen Steinzeug-Ton, hauptsächlich an der Töpferscheibe. Der verwendete Ton ist stark Schamott-haltig und rau. Der dunkle anthrazitfarbene bis schwarze Farbton der Tonerde stammt von Eisen- und Manganoxiden, die sich im Ton befinden. Saeam verwendet für die glasierten Objekte eine ihrer fünf „Signature“ Glasuren, die sie selbst herstellt und bei Bedarf mischt. Einige Stücke sind nur auf der Innenseite glasiert und halbglänzend, um ihre Funktionalität als Geschirr zu verbessern. Gebrannt werden die Objekte im elektrischen Ofen im Oxidationsbrand in Saeams Atelier. Jedes Stück wird zweimal gebrannt: zuerst bei 950 °C und dann noch einmal bei 1250 °C. Die unglasierten Werke werden hochgebrannt, bis der Tonkörper vollständig verglast ist. Dadurch ist die Oberfläche dicht, porenfrei und lebensmittelecht. Auch ohne Glasur bleiben die Gefäße langlebig und hygienisch für den Alltag.

Saeam Kwon was born in a small town in Taebaek, Korea, and started working with clay in 2009. Since then, she has focused on making fine stoneware that combines minimalist design with traditional Korean influences. She moved to Berlin in 2017 and has been working full-time as a ceramicist ever since. All her works are created in her studio in Berlin-Friedrichshain.
Her works are made of rough, dark, muted clay, the appearance of which is contrasted by refined details and minimal weight. She turns the coarse fireclay on the wheel, which is rarely done in the ceramic trade, as it is only suitable for this to a limited extent due to its firm and rough properties. Nevertheless, the artist accepts the difficult conditions and rough hands in order to create her special ceramics.
Saeam writes about the process of creating her ceramic objects:
"I rarely start with a fixed design, but have a rough idea. I prefer to work directly at the potter's wheel and let the shape develop in my hands. The final design is always created by making several versions and choosing the best one. Ceramics are unpredictable, sometimes you need dozens, even hundreds of tests. Even if I have a perfect image in my head, I don't know if it's possible until I try it out."
